Understanding Lifestyle and Care Options
Today, seniors have a wide range of choices for lifestyle and care options that provide anything from convenience services in an independent neighborhood to 24-hour skilled care. And now, senior seniors can plan for the future with care continuums all available in one community. For example, an elderly person could live in their home either independently or receive in-home care for an extended period of time, then move to an assisted living facility, and later transfer to a skilled nursing center, if necessary. This type of spectrum of care maximizes independence for as long as possible and allows for easier, more gradual adjustments. Below is a brief description of the range of services that are available for seniors today.
Independent Living
Independent living is a senior housing option that maximizes seniors’ independence and freedom while providing meals, conveniences and services within the community. Independent living residents do not require any support or personal care services.
Assisted Living
Assisted living is a senior care option designed to help seniors with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, grooming, etc) in a setting that allows seniors to still be as independent as possible. Assisted living residents do not require 24-hour care and can live on their own.
Skilled Nursing
Skilled nursing care provides 24-hour care at a licensed facility. Sometimes referred to as Health Centers or Skilled Care Centers, Skilled Nursing Facilities primarily engage in long-term and/or short-term skilled medical care and rehabilitative services.
Memory Care
Memory care communities provide specialized care for those seniors who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia, or other memory-related disorders. In most cases, memory care communities are secure facilities. Memory care can be provided in an assisted living or skilled nursing setting, depending on the intensity of care that is required.
Continuing Care Retirement Community
Continuing Care Retirement Communities are licensed, full service senior communities offering all levels of care (independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care) on one campus setting. Some CCRCs also offer memory care services as part of the continuum. At many CCRCs, long-term care contracts provide a security of care with services provided through all stages of senior care in one community.
Adult Day Services
Adult Day Service is a senior care option designed to provide seniors with necessary care and activities during the daytime hours. Adult Day services can be provided on a specific schedule or on a day-to-day basis and are generally offered in a skilled care center.
