Registering Early with FAMLI
May 6, 2026
Dear Stakeholders,
As you may know, the Maryland Department of Labor is preparing to launch a paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program. More information about FAMLI is below and can be found on their website.
I’m reaching out with an opportunity for you to help refine the employer registration process. In the coming months, all Maryland employers will need to register with FAMLI. But before the process is opened to everyone, the FAMLI Division is hosting what they’re calling a “soft launch.” During this time, the registration process is being shared with a small group of employers like you, so that the Division can gather your feedback and make adjustments as needed. If you are interested in registering with FAMLI and then offering your feedback on the process, please fill out this interest form.
Important note: so the Division can gather user feedback and iterate in real time, the Division asks that you not share the link with other contacts or third party administrators at this time.
If you have questions about FAMLI, please reach out to their Customer Care Contact Center at 410-525-4010 or paid.leave@maryland.gov.
Thanks in advance for your consideration.
About FAMLI
Starting January 2028, eligible employees will be able to take up to 12 weeks of paid, job-protected leave. Employees will be able to take time away from work to welcome a new child, tend to a serious health condition, care for a loved one, or manage urgent family needs related to deployment—while still being paid up to $1,000 per week.
Important dates:
January 1, 2027: Contributions begin
January 2028: Benefits become available
FAMLI is funded through contributions that employers will remit on behalf of themselves and their employees to the FAMLI Division every quarter. Employers may withhold up to 50% of the contribution rate from employee paychecks. Withholding will begin January 1, 2027 before benefits start so that the contributions employers remit to the state create a trust fund that will grow over time. The fund will pay out benefits for approved claims starting January 2028.
All employers with at least one employee in Maryland will be required to register. There are no exceptions.
