| Greetings! Last month, we released our latest report examining Maryland’s economy: Maryland Industry Analysis: Healthcare and the Economy. As part of the release, we hosted an event featuring Comptroller Lierman, Secretary Seshamani, and a panel of health care experts. Health Care Report: Maryland Industry Analysis Health Care Report Fact Sheet: Maryland Industry Analysis: Healthcare and the Economy Fact Sheet Health care is the dominant sector in Maryland and a cornerstone of the state’s economy, employing more people and touching more communities than any other industry. Since 2022, health care has added 51,000 jobs – nearly as many as all other industries in Maryland combined. The sector also reflects Maryland’s diversity, with a workforce largely composed of people of color, immigrants, and women, and serves as the private sector’s most important engine for job creation amid declines in federal employment. However, this growth also brings vulnerabilities, including dependence on federal financing, increased financial pressures on governments and consumers, limited productivity gains, and a relatively small multiplier effect on the broader economy, which this report aims to candidly assess for policymakers and the public.
